Neuroplasticity repairs vision loss through VRT

It is not that we can only learn when we are very young. The term neuroplasticity is associated with the learning function that takes place in all of us when we are infants. But it has been proved after recent researches and findings that the learning process of the brain takes place all through our lives. The human brain has an innate ability to respond to new kinds of information, stimulation and damage by forging connections of the neuron.

In plain language the brain has the capacity to rewire and it can also happen after a brain injury. Neural connections are forged when there is brain damage or an injury. The brain gets reorganized by a multiple number of ways and the process is physical. Our environment, stimulation and learning can act as a catalyst for change. And the change occurs in the physical structure of the brain and also impacts its functioning.

With the help of the physical changes in the brain, our abilities also undergo a change. We can learn a new form of exercise, a game and recall names of new acquaintances. Brain scans after therapy have shown to undergo changes in its activity. It has been proved that the brain can reorganize itself. A new form of treatment called VRT or Vision Restoration Therapy has shown to effectively change the functioning of the brain. Activity changes and the brain can successfully reorganize itself which has proven the plasticity of the brain.

Therapies based on neruoplasticity can better the conditions of people suffering from defects that require stimulation for proper functioning of the brain. Although the mechanism for recovery is yet to be determined, neuroscientists have found that the brain can get remapped with the help of imaging therapy. Neurons can leave out the damaged areas from stroke or damage and take a circuitous route for new connection in the cortex of the brain. Vision can be restored to those with brain injury and stroke.

Results of VRT are determined by the amount of attention the patient focuses during treatment which is the primary reason for the success of this type of therapy. It is common for victims of accident, severe assault injuries or stroke to suffer vision loss. VRT is the non-invasive way of the visual cortex stimulation in the brain. Primarily, before putting a patient under VRT, the extent of the visual damage or deficit in vision is evaluated.

Neuroplasticity is triggered by the therapy of stimulating the border area around the blindness based on the extent of the damage. VRT can be done at home and is usually a 30 minute daily session for six months. But the extent of the therapy is changed as the patient begins to respond. But it has been seen that no matter how effective the VRT, the result ultimately depends on the amount of attention and focus the patient is able to put in. It also depends on the proper environment that can help the therapy that has to be regular and consistent as well.
